7th Annual race for the steaks

Raising the steaks on Nutrition and Health

It’s time to giddy-up and support The Idaho Foodbank through the Beef Counts program and the Treasure Valley YMCA, by registering for “Race for the Steaks” which this year, is Raising the Steaks on Nutrition and Health.  Your registration fee will be equally divided to help The Idaho Foodbank provide nutritious beef protein to those in need and supporting the Treasure Valley YMCA's community health programming that benefits individuals and families.

While COVID has pushed this annual race to go virtual – we are going prime time with a ‘beefed up’ race packet valued at over $40! 

So, let’s get out and hit the trails and get ready to mooooove!  You can still herd up your friends, create teams with co-workers or family, and come up with team names. That part will still be the same.  We will be back next year but for now, we will keep everyone safe and healthy by going virtual.

Idaho’s beef industry recognizes its impact on Idaho and the effect it has on the local economies. Celebrating its Ten-Year Anniversary -- Beef Counts is a program designed to provide a consistent supply of high-quality protein throughout the year to The Idaho Foodbank. In response to the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Treasure Valley Family YMCA launched the 2020 COVID-19 Sustaining and Annual Fundraising Campaign to address our immediate crisis. This allowed us to sustain current programs and services, and to reopen with the staff and programming to meet the needs of our community.

Each participant has the opportunity to join Food Network Host and Today Show regular, chef Mark Anderson of the Grill Dads for a virtual cooking class to learn how to make three meals from one cut of beef!  

  • Primary Meal: Porter Braised Beef Short Ribs. This one will be perfectly seasoned with simple ingredients which will allow us to celebrate the flavor of the beef and also create options for us for our next two meals.    
  • Second Meal: Shredded beef tacos birria. We will add some cumin, garlic, and ancho to the leftover braising liquid then slowly simmer our beef until it is heated through. Then it will go into the taco in a cast iron skillet with some Oaxacan (sub shredded mozz) cheese. Finish with hot sauce, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime.    
  • Third Meal: Shepard's Pie. Add some fresh thyme and tomato paste to our leftover beef and carrots, top it with some buttery whipped Idaho potatoes and bake it until bubbly and delicious.
