Brackett Ranch

Brackett Ranch: Committed To Raising High-Quality Idaho Beef

Jared Brackett is a fifth-generation rancher from Idaho who blends tradition with innovation in his sustainable ranching practices. We had the opportunity to speak with Jared about navigating the challenges of a high desert environment in Castleford, Idaho, integrating genetic advancements, and his dedication to his land and cattle. Jared also serves on the Idaho Beef Council board of directors.

Background

The Brackett family’s ranching legacy dates back five generations. Jared grew up on his family’s ranch, and after graduating from Texas A&M, acquired a new ranch operation in the high desert of Idaho where he lives with his wife Tay. He owns a cow-calf operation featuring a pure-bred Angus herd.

“Cow-calf operations form the foundation of the beef industry,” explained Jared, “raising mother cows and calves until weaning.” Unlike typical operations, Jared’s ranch manages the entire process from birth to consumer, ensuring quality control through the entirety of the process. Cows (female cattle after they give birth) may stay on the ranch up to 13 years, while bulls are kept for about five years, before moving on to the next phase of the beef production system. Calves spend about a year on the ranch before moving onto feedlots.

Calving & Weaning

Jared's ranch is in a high desert region characterized by a dry climate, cold nights, and strong grass. This environment provides unique challenges and opportunities.

“During the summer, we move the cattle further into the hills, where the higher elevation and greener pastures offer ideal grazing conditions,” said Jared. The ranch includes irrigated pasture, which benefits from excellent water supply. Unlike many operations, Jared doesn’t need to gather his cattle until April, avoiding the harsh winter months.

This seasonal pattern of ranching keeps Jared busy, but his favorite time of year is in the fall, when harvesting takes place. This period allows him to see the fruits of his labor, witnessing the health and quality of his cattle.

Ranching Practices & Animal Welfare

Jared’s ranch places a significant emphasis on genetics, “We utilize DNA testing for all calves to track and improve their lineage. This genetic information allows us to make informed decisions about breeding, ensuring that his herd remains healthy and productive”. By zeroing in on traits like ribeye size, Jared can select bulls that enhance the overall quality of his cattle and the end product: delicious, high-quality beef.

Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) is integral to Jared’s ranching practices. He views BQA as the foundation upon which all other best practices are built. By adhering to BQA standards, Jared can ensure that his cattle are handled with care, reducing stress and improving overall animal welfare.

“I think it would be great if BQA education could be incorporated into high school and college agricultural programs to foster a deeper understanding of best practices from an early age,” he said, adding “this would educate our next generation of ranchers early on the importance of BQA standards.”

Sustainability & Land Management

Jared is also working towards regenerative agriculture certification, focusing on land management in addition to animal care. “Regenerative agriculture includes the health of the land, carbon sequestration efforts, and grazing trends, ensuring that the ranch not only sustains its productivity but also contributes positively to the environment,” Jared explained.

The Future of The Beef Industry

Despite the challenges from Idaho’s population growth in the last few years, Jared values the connection and lifestyle that comes along with ranching. “Newer residents to Idaho may not fully understand or appreciate the ranching way of life, but I hope that there is way to find balance between long-time residents and newcomers.  Responsible grazing and land management are critical to ensuring that the land in Idaho remains productive and resilient.”

Jared mentioned that active participation and volunteering are crucial for the future of the ranching community. He calls on his peers in the agriculture community to get involved in leadership roles and contribute to the industry’s ongoing improvement. “By working together and sharing knowledge, ranchers can continue to innovate and adapt to changing circumstances” he said.

The Brackett ranch merges tradition with modern practices. Jared and his family’s commitment ensures the vitality of Idaho’s agricultural landscape, with optimism for future generations upholding these principles.
